Haiti's Need for foreign aid
Haiti’s tumultuous history has led to little being done on the economic front, causing the country to still be plagued by poverty. Haiti struggles from a lack of resources and natural disasters, which has led to widespread poverty This has caused Haiti to have a lot of human rights issues that countries and organizations want to work to fix. Countries and organizations give money for projects, but complete them with non-Haitian labor, which it isn't sustainable. Having new schools, food brought in or medical care is all beneficial, but the Haitians do not gain a way to make money or grow food, which leaves them impoverished and still needing the aid because they cannot support themselves. Not only does Haiti get non-sustainable aid, it struggles to get aid at all because of the government. The Haitian government is frustrated that most of the aid in Haiti is performed through NGOs and that they know little about the projects being performed, so sometimes the government makes it difficult for aid to get into the country. Not only is it difficult because of the government, but the lack of infrastructure also makes it difficult for aid to get to the more rural areas. While the Haitian government wants more control over the aid, States are worried about the ability of Haiti to perform the needed projects and of corruption. Therefore, the states donate money and have it implemented, because they do not trust the abilities of the Haitian government. All of this has prevented true growth in Haiti, leading to the country still depending on the foreign aid.
One of the biggest donors to Haiti is the United States, who donated just under $360 million in 2012. The United States has been very closely linked with Haiti ever since it occupied Haiti. For many years the United States has been one of Haiti's biggest donors and there does not seem to be any change soon. The United States government even has a special coordinator for Haiti and through the website one can see the current strategies and reports pertaining to the United States and Haiti.
